Basics of Practice - Building a Strong Foundation: We are always practicing something. However, often we are building bad habits that we don't realize and moving farther away from the goals of our practice. In this workshop, we refine the basics of our practice to make sure we are on the right path. We will look into how to practice for maximum gain. After talking about practice techniques, we will focus on how to breathe correctly and how to correctly use our muscles. You will leave with your postures feeling easier, a better understanding of where to focus your effort and with an understanding of how to make progress. This workshop will include a lecture and a full practice.

Bending the Spine: Forward and backward bending postures are the gems of an asana practice. They create movement in the spine leading to better posture, circulation, digestion and greater energy. In this all-levels class we will explore effective engagement of the abdominal and back muscles (making your postures feel easier!) and learn how the combination of the spinal movements balance the nervous system. You will learn how to adjust your postures based on your current mobility, and leave knowing how to get the most out of your practice. 
This workshop will include a lecture and a full practice.

Yoga Therapeutics - Back Pain & Stress Reduction: Therapeutic exercises are simple body movements to improve functional health, strength and range of motion. This workshop will focus on bringing stability and relief to the spine, especially the lower back. Also we will focus on calming the body, breath and mind, reducing stress and creating a restful state. Learn how to recognize and manage pain in your everyday life, and also how to calm yourself at bedtime or in stressful situations. This workshop is ideal for beginners, elders, non-yogis and yoga teachers. Bring your family members or friends who have injuries or pain. This workshop will include a lecture and a gentle practice.

All About Abs: This workshop explores the very misleading concept of the "core" in order to gain a subtle understanding of the abdominal muscles and their function. This workshop breaks down the different functions of the abdominal muscles so that we can bend and twist the spine with both power and ease. We will explore how to feel both free and stable in movements of the spine and develop our asana practice. This workshop will include a lecture and a full practice.

Power of Breathing: Learn the foundations of yogic pranayama (breath control) practice. We will begin with fundamentals of how to breathe and offer a handful of breathing exercises to build the right strength and focus. Learn how breathing affects the nervous system and how to control it. This can bring energy, relaxation or balance. We will teach pranayama exercises and practice them all together. This workshop will include a lecture and a seated breathing practice.

Meet Scott and Ida Jo

Scott Lamps and Ida Jo are yoga scholars and practitioners of asana/postures, pranayama/breath control, and meditation. They are the head teachers of Ghosh Yoga in the West.

They were awarded the title Yoga Acharya (Master of Yoga) by the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center, an ashram founded by Swami Vishnudevananda. They hold Master's degrees in Traditions of Yoga and Meditation from SOAS University of London. 

Their approach balances a deep knowledge of history and tradition; the most up-to-date scientific knowledge about the body and mind; and commitment to personal practice.

They treat every student they meet with individual care and attention, striving to bring health, perspective, information and peace.

They are the authors of 4 Ghosh Yoga Practice Manuals, which strive to clarify and simplify the purpose and practice of over 100 postures and therapeutic exercises. They also authored a book of modifications for the postures of Bikram Yoga, entitled 26+2 Modifications.

They compiled, edited and published the lost manuscript of 84 Yoga Asanas by Buddha Bose, and edited the English translation of Gouri Shankar Mukerji's works from German and Bengali.

They often teach yoga philosophy and history at festivals, workshops and teacher training programs.

Ida works directly with Ghosh's Yoga College in Kolkata, India, facilitating their Therapeutic Yoga Teacher Training program. 

Scott teaches Anatomy & Physiology as part of the faculty of Perennial Yoga's Teacher Training in Madison, WI.

  • They earned Masters Degrees in 'Traditions of Yoga and Meditation' from SOAS University of London. Both were awarded their degrees with distinction. Ida also studied at the University of Cambridge.

  • They were awarded the title "Yoga Acharya" (Master of Yoga) by the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center, an ashram founded by Swami Vishnudevananda.

  • They studied therapeutic and prescriptive yoga at Ghosh's Yoga College in Kolkata, India. They studied under the guidance of Muktamala Mitra, the granddaughter of Bishnu Charan Ghosh who teaches yoga therapy in the direct lineage of her father and grandfather.

  • They studied Advanced Forrest Yoga with Heidi Sormaz and Cat Allen.

  • They are twice-certified by Tony Sanchez, having studied both his Intermediate and Advanced systems.
